All's set for special election in Ilocos Sur

- Sheila Crisostomo -

MANILA, Philippines - Everything is in place for the May 28 special congressional election in the first district of Ilocos Sur, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said over the weekend.

Comelec Commissioner Rene Samiento said they are prepared to conduct the special poll which will determine the replacement of resigned congressman Ronald Singson who was convicted of drug trafficking by a Hong Kong court last February.

“I was able to talk to Commissioner (Elias) Yusoph and Chairman (Sixto) Brillantes and they said it’s all systems go for the May 28 election,” he said.

The Comelec will be administering the special election manually, as there is no need for an automated system since the ballots will not be consolidated at the national level.

“It’s going to be manual because this is just one district. It’s going to be costly if we automate it,” Sarmiento said.

The poll body has been coordinating with the military and police to ensure that the special election will be orderly and honest.

The Comelec will spend P18.4 million for the poll. The first district of Ilocos Sur has 161,975 registered voters.
