Rebels torch abandoned Army detachment

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY , Philippines  – Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels burned an abandoned Army detachment in Barangay Libertad, Escalante City, Negros Occidental on Tuesday night.

Initial investigation showed around 50 armed men swooped down on the detachment and set it on fire.

Chief Inspector Rolly Pondevilla, Escalante police chief, said only a portion of the detachment was destroyed. “Maybe they want to project that they are still a force to reckon with,”Pondevilla told a radio interview.

The attack followed the ambush that killed a farmer and his driver in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental last week.
