IBAAN, Philippines (The Filipino Connection) – A 45-year-old businessman and former barangay councilman who previously yielded to authorities as drug pusher was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Barangay Lapu-Lapu, Ibaan, Batangas on Tuesday, police said.

PSI Joel Ilagan, acting chief of police, identified the victim as Romano Hernandez.

Initial police investigation said at about 1:30 p.m., the victim was standing in the middle of the road when he was waylaid by two unidentified gunmen aboard a gray car without plate number.

The wounded victim was immediately rushed to Queen Mary Hospital but attending physician DDioscoro Angelia declared him dead upon arrival.

Police investigators said they have yet to identify the alleged assassins, who immediately escaped after the incident heading to the direction of San Jose, Batangas.

They are also looking at the victim’s alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade as possible motive for the killing as the latter previously surrendered to the police’s Oplan Tokhang Program as drug pusher.
