MANILA, Philippines -- The Taguig City Police arrested 117 people for involvement in illegal drugs between June 1 and July 6 while 351 drug dependents surrendered in the same period.

Taguig police chief, Senior Superintendent Allen Ocden added that more than 26 grams of shabu, eight grams of marijuana, and various drug paraphernalia were also seized in that time.

According to the Taguig police, anti-illegal drugs operations in the city have yielded the most number of arrests in the Southern Police District (SPD).

In comparison, Pasay City made  54 arrests, Makati made 42, Parañaque had 26, Las Piñas arrested 40, Muntinlupa made 49 arrests, and Pateros had 14. Anti-drug operatives based at the SPD headquarters made 10 arrests.

The suspects were charged with illegal drug trafficking and detained pending their prosecution in court.

Ocden said the Taguig police is actively implementing “Oplan Tokhang” as ordered by the Philippine National Police chief, Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

The concept of “Oplan Tokhang”, which is coined from the Visayan words “Toktok” (knock) and “Hangyo” (request or persuade), includes house-to-house visits by the police, in coordination with the local government units and barangay officials, to persuade alleged drug users and pushers to surrender.

Under “Oplan Tokhang”, the Taguig police facilitated the surrender of 351 drug users and peddlers in the city who  thereafter signed pledges that they would cease using or peddling drugs.

Some of them also requested the city to place them in a drug rehabilitation program.

Meanwhile, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said the city is ccommited to fighting the spread of illegal drugs and fully supports President Duterte’s directive to cleanse the country of illegal drugs in the soonest possible time.

“Rest assured that the city of Taguig will continue to work hard to attain our dream of becoming a drug-free nation,” Mayor Cayetano said.
