ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A state of calamity has been declared in the city of Lamitan in Basilan to hasten the release of funds to mitigate the effects of El Niño.

A resolution declaring the state of calamity was passed by the city council on Wednesday, Lamitan City Vice Mayor Roderick Furigay said yesterday.

City agriculture officer Olivia Ablao reported that 13,125.5 hectares of lands  planted with rubber trees, coconut, cacao, rice and corn have been destroyed.

At least 14,478 farmers are seeking assistance from the government, Ablao said.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Mujiv Hataman said he directed the head of the agriculture department of the ARMM to coordinate with the affected farmers.

Meanwhile, damage to agricultural lands due to El Niño in this city has risen to P17.7 million.

The Zamboanga city government declared a state of calamity last month due to the damage sustained by the agricultural sector. At least 860 hectares of land have been destroyed since November.
