Whale sharks return to Donsol

Celso Amo, Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – After shying away for some time because of the warm weather, whale sharks have been sighted again off Donsol.

At least seven whale sharks have been spotted since the first week of this month, said Donsol tourism officer Nenita Pedragosa.

“We’re glad they started to show up because tourists are coming,” Pedragosa said.

Maria Nini Ravailla, regional director for the Department of Tourism in Bicol, said they expect more sightings in the coming days, noting that February is the peak season for whale shark interaction.

“The butanding interaction activity in Donsol is Bicolandia’s pride and treasure,” Ravanilla said. “They are back in their home.”

Donsol is dubbed as the whale shark capital of the world.

The World Wide Fund for Nature said whale sharks, popularly called here as butanding, begin to show up off Donsol between December to May.
