MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Sunday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct an investigation into the mall fire in Davao City.

In a statement released Monday, Aguirre said he asked the NBI to identify if there was any criminal liability to the blaze which killed 37 lives. The NBI was also directed to file necessary charges against parties determined to be responsible.

“We want the NBI to be involved with its own probe. Their findings will enable us to make those responsible fully accountable before our courts via the criminal cases that will be filed,” Aguirre said.

“ By punishing those responsible, we can set an example to others so that, hopefully,  there will be no repetition of these tragedies,” he added.

On Saturday morning, the fire sparked at the four-story NCCC Mall. The Bureau of Fire Protection reportedly declared the blaze under control on Saturday morning.

The blaze, however, took at least 37 lives who were trapped in the establishment.

Aguirre then offered his condolences to the bereaved families. He also asked the public to pray for all those affected by the tragic fire.

“Foremost,  we offer our solemn condolences to the families of those persons who lost their lives in this very unfortunate incident,” the justice secretary said.

“The loss of lives and the resulting damage caused underscore the need to determine if someone is at fault and should be held criminally liable,” he added.
