MANILA, Philippines — Presidential Communications Operations Office chief Martin Andanar on Sunday expressed optimism after the country won the bid to host the FIBA 2023 World Cup.

Andanar expects that the hosting of the sports event would boost tourism and investments in the country.

“Winning the bid to host FIBA 2023 World Cup together with Japan and Indonesia marks the country's re-emergence and rising in the world of international sports,” Andanar said in a statement.

“The 2023 World Cup is slated for Manila, Okinawa and Jakarta, with the group stages to be played in five venues. We can expect this to spur tourism even further and provide added stimulus for businesses as well as investments,” he added.

Andanar cited that the Philippines last hosted FIBA in 1978.

The communications chief then praised Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas chair emeritus Manny Pangilinan for securing the hosting.

“We laud the initiative, hard work and commitment of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas and Mr. Manny V. Pangilinan in championing the country in securing the coveted games. We are looking forward to #PlayLouderin2023,” Andanar said.

Pangilinan first attempted to submit a bid to stage the 2019 World Cup. However, FIBA Central Board voted for China, 14-7, over the Philippines to host the 2019 tournament.
