MANILA, Philippines – The military wants the security template used at last Monday’s Feast of the Black Nazarene implemented at the launching of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and the Miss Universe pageant – two big international events the country is hosting this year.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs Office chief Col. Edgard Arevalo noted the successful security operations implemented during the Black Nazarene procession and the preparations made by security forces ahead of the religious event.
“We like to make it as a template. If I may say, we will recommend it to the Philippine National Police (PNP) to make it a template during the ASEAN summit launching and the holding of the Miss Universe pageant,” Arevalo said.
The military will be playing, like it did during the Black Nazarene procession, an active support role to the PNP in securing the two international events that will be held in various areas of the country, including Davao City.
ASEAN member-representatives will be converging on Sunday in Davao City for the launch of the country’s hosting of the summit slated in November.
The candidates of the Miss Universe pageant are also expected to visit Davao City as part of the activities of the global event.
“The AFP will be on a support role to the PNP. But we have (troop) augmentation from the Army, Navy and the Air Force who have already been flown to Davao City to beef up our police personnel there to provide security,” Arevalo said.
Troops were flown yesterday to Davao City, President Duterte’s hometown. They would be under the operational control of the Eastern Mindanao Command’s Joint Task Force Haribon.
