College student hurt in alleged hazing rites

MANILA, Philippines – An 18-year-old college student is confined in a hospital due to injuries she allegedly suffered during sorority initiation rites in Las Piñas City.

The victim, a student of the Lyceum of the Philippine University in Manila, is recuperating in an undisclosed hospital in Metro Manila.

Chief Superintendent Tomas Apolinario, Southern Police District director, said the student’s parents on Tuesday sought their help in locating the suspects responsible for the alleged hazing.

“We are investigating the circumstances behind this incident,” Apolinario said in a phone interview.

The alleged hazing occurred at a house along F. Ocampo street in Barangay Pamplona 3 at around 10 a.m. on Jan. 8.

The student told probers that she was invited by her classmates to attend the sorority’s activity in Las Piñas.            

She said she was not aware that she would undergo initiation rites.

Apolinario said they were coordinating their investigation with the Manila Police District to track down the suspects known only as Yonara, Marie and Brandy.
