MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Monday admitted that he was puzzled when President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the reinstatement of the chief of the Crime Investigation and Detection Group Region 8 (CIDG-8).

“Hindi po pangkarinawan (order of reinstatement). To be frank nagtataka ako, but who am I to question the wisdom of the president?” Dela Rosa told Sen. Bam Aquino at the Senate probe into the killing of late Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr.

Dela Rosa said that since the order came from the chief executive he trusted it for he might have a reason which he said Duterte later on explained.

The PNP chief confirmed he ordered the administrative relief of Marcos after alleged drug lord Kerwin Espinosa implicated Marcos in the illegal drug trade. However, on the same day after his order, Dela Rosa said Duterte asked him to reinstate Marcos in office.

“Pagbalik nila dito [mula Abu Dhabi] ni-relieve si Marcos, administrative relief dahil gusto ko maimbestigahan yung kanyang involvement sa pagtanggap ng drug payola,” Dela Rosa said.

Dela Rosa said the reinstatement took place two weeks before the late mayor was slain. He admitted that there is a possibility that Rolando could’ve been alive had Marcos been completely relieved from office.

“Sana buhay ‘yun (Rolando),” he said.
