U-Hoops USA edges Joemangs in friendly match
CEBU, Philippines - The visiting U-Hoops USA banked on a strong start to outclass Team Joemangs, 70-63, in their basketball exhibition match last Thursday afternoon at the Cebu City Sports Institute gym.
U-Hoops is composed of collegiate and NBA D-League players in the United States led by C.J. Williams of the Texas Legends. They are in town to connect with local cagers as part of their community outreach program.
Williams, who played college ball with North Carolina before turning pro, finished with 15 points.
Jeremy Bogus topscored for the U-Hoops with 18 points, while Nick Crawford chipped in with 17 markers. They were in full control after closing the first half with a 10-point advantage, 36-26.
The Joemangs side of team owner Joselito Manguerra staged a last ditch rally but their comeback hopes were put out by Williams, Crawford and Demarcus Weeks who connived for 21 of U-Hoops' 23 points in the final period.
JJ Calang, who currently plays for San Beda, posted a game-high 24 points for Joemangs. Joey Manguerra, a commercial veteran and a regular fixture in pocket tournaments all over the Vis-Min area, notched 13 points in a losing effort. (FREEMAN)
