Fernando Legaspi-Maria Fiel, the ascendant of senators

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The union of Fernando Marcelino Legaspi and Maria Patricia Gelbolingo Fiel produced public servants of national stature. The genealogy is presented with the indispensable information provided by Prince Salamat of the Fiel Clan.

Fernando Legaspi and Maria Fiel had twin children, a daughter by the name of Brigida Fiel Legaspi and a son by the name of Marcelino Fiel Legaspi. The daughter, Brigida, married Pantaleon Geronimo Sotto. From that union came their children: Godofredo, Vicente, Melecio, Maria Concordia, Marcelino, Fernando, Maria Brigida, and Maria Filomena.

One of the children of Fernando and Brigida, Marcelino, married Pascuala Yap and became the parents of Don Vicente and Don Filemon, the only brother siblings in the country who became newspapermen, congressmen, delegates of the 1934 Constitutional Convention, lawyers, and senators. The Sotto couple were just ordinary merchants of the Lutao District, now called Carbon. Pascuala, a fish vendor, and Marcelino, a porter, rose to become wealthy merchants, subsequently making Marcelino a Gobernadorcillo of the Parian District, thus making the Sotto family one of the old families of the district.

Don Vicente, who married Maria Ojeda of Dumanjug, Cebu, had six children: Galileo, Voltaire, Tagakotta, Britania, Marcelino, and Suga (later to become Cebu's first woman surgeon and long-time city councilor). Though he sired more than 30 children from other women he recognized all of them.

Marcelino married Dr. Herminia Castelo. They are the parents of Valmar, Vicente III (Vice Mayor of Quezon City in 1988, elected as senator in 1992 and reelected in 2010, presently majority floor leader), Marcelino (Maru), and Marvic (Vic).

Maria Patricia Gelbolingo Fiel married twice. Her second husband was Salvador Hugo Oppus Embrado who is the great-great grandparent of Senator Jose Fortich Ozamiz of Misamis Occidental.

Godofredo Legaspi Sotto (son of Fernando Sotto and Maria Fiel) married Avelina Pawid and had a daughter by the name of Nicolasa Sotto, who married Don Gregorio "Tan Goring" Embrado, the latter was the brother of Don Ricardo Gerardo del Rosario Alcover de Garchitorena Embrado, the first Cebuano senate writer and secretary to Don Manuel Quezon, the country's first senate president. On other hand, Don Gregorio, the husband of the first cousin of Don Filemon (Nicolasa Sotto) became the senator's secretary from the Taft Commission up to the 5th Legislature.
