Don Vicente Sotto St., Cebu City

Don Vicente Sotto Street is the formerly unnamed street leading from Pier 3 to Mabini Street and the Colon Extension from Mabini Street up to Martires Street (now named the M.J. Cuenco Avenue).

The first street naming ordinance was enacted on July 7, 1953 (City Ordinance No. 164), it was sponsored by Councilor Florentino D. Tecson.

On November 7, 1987 the Cebu City Council enacted City Ordinance No. 1275 extending the "V. Sotto Street" from the corner of Arellano Boulevard extending towards Mabini Street. The ordinance was sponsored by Councilor Reynaldo S. Mateo. It was approved on December 10, 1987 by Antonio R. Veloso when the latter was appointed Officer-In-Charge of Cebu City.

Don Vicente was the son of Marcelino Legaspi Sotto and Pascuala Yap, they started as ordinary merchants in the Lutao District now known as Carbon Market. The parents of Don Vicente through industry and perseverance rose to become influential merchants, making Marcelino, a Gobernadorcillo of Parian District.

Don Vicente was born on April 18, 1877. He went to Seminario de San Carlos and his pre-law course at the Colegio San Juan de Letran.

Vicente or Nyor Inting opened the newspaper "La Justicia" and 'El Nacional," he was arrested by the Americans at the Fort San Pedro on April 6, 1899.  Don Vicente was prosecuted by the Americans for attacking them and instead of being discouraged continued with his fight for Cebuano Independence.

Vicente on July 16, 1901 gave birth to "Ang Suga" the first newspaper in Cebuano. He imposed a self-exile and went to Hong Kong after being charged for a crime. While in Hong Kong he won as Mayor of the Municipality of Cebu in 1907, his Vice Mayor Francisco Arias assumed the position in his behalf. Don Vicente though passed the bar was not able to immediately practiced law. Sotto was elected as representative of the old 2nd Congressional District of Cebu, then as delegate of the 1934 Constitutional Convention and he died while he was senator on May 28, 1950.

Don Vicente married Maria Festin Ojeda of Dumanjug, Cebu. Before his marriage to Maria, Vicente had a son from Bernabela Manuel and had a son named Cesar, who became a political figure in Cebu. Vicente first married Isabel Ruiz but their child Habadad died before it reached two years old.

Don Vicente and Maria had the following children: Galileo who married Natividad Jose, Voltaire born in Dumanjug married Josefina Benito, Tagakotta married Paula Inumerable, Britania married Deogracias Yanong, Marcelino married Dr. Herminia Castelo (they are the parents of his grandson and namesake Vicente "Tito" Sotto III), and Suga, who became a Doctor of Medicine and married a fellow doctor, Merito N. Yuvienco.

Don Vicente, has been given the title as "The Father of Cebuano Journalism, Language and Literature."
