From a mother who braved a super typhoon to save her children, a single mom who raised a family of 11, to a nanny who became a mother to her orphaned child, Magandang Buhay’s first Salamat Momshie Awards honored super momshies who showed great love, selflessness and sacrifice for their families.

As the Kapamilya talk show celebrates its first anniversary, Salamat Momshie Awards were also fitting tribute to mothers who have always been part of the insightful discussions by hosts Melai Cantiveros, Karla Estrada and Jolina Magdangal on weekday mornings.

Six momshies were honored, namely Azon Aguila and Rose Gumantason from Luzon; Rodilla Omillo and Lilia Demillones from the Visayas; and Juanita Abayon and Rose Cabajon from Mindanao.

Rodilla showed courage when she saved her daughters during Typhoon Yolanda. Her youngest daughter, Rochelle, could vividly remember how her mother braved the heavy rains and broke through the neighbor’s barb wired fence just to get them to safety.

Years after, they managed to rebuild their lives through the resilience, strength and hard work of Rodilla. To show their love and gratitude, Rochelle and her siblings made sure they did well in their studies and become achievers in school.

“I’m really thankful that she never gave up on us. She’s with us through thick and thin,” said Rochelle.

Azon showed how mothers would walk the extra mile to ensure her children’s bright future. And she managed to raise all 11 by herself. After the death of her husband, she started her own business by selling burger patties in a plaza in San Jose, Batangas. Her hard work paid off. Today, she is proud of her children who are all professionals.

Rose was a nanny who later became a mom to Mara, whose father died when she was 11 and her mom died a month before she turned 18. She was left under Rosa’s care. They parted ways for a few years, but when Mara was pregnant with her child and needed someone to be by her side, she ran to Rose.

“When I called her, she just asked me ‘When do you need me?’ And so she left the household where she was working as a yaya and went back to take care of me,” Mara recounted. “I can’t imagine entrusting my daughter to someone else. I’m just very thankful that she devoted her life to me and my family.”

Similarly, Lilia also became a mother to her godchildren, giving her time, attention, love and more. She became second mom to Geniva and her brother Jerome after their parents separated and even sent Geniva to high school.

A farmer back then in Zamboanga del Sur, Juanita led a simple life with her family. Life may be tough, but she remained hardworking just to provide the needs of the family.

Two things happened in her life that devastated her — when her husband left her for another woman and when she lost her third child in an accident. She almost gave up, but eventually found the strength to rebuild her life. Today, all four of her children are professionals. She also welcomed her husband back to show her children the value of forgiveness.

Lastly, Rose’s daughter Eula was a sickly child. Just to provide for her medication, Rose left her beloved profession behind just so she can attend to Eula. They even moved to Manila and started a new life just so she can give her the proper medical care.

The awardees were honored and featured in Magandang Buhay recently with momshies Melai, Karla and Jolina.
