New on the block

- Philip Cu-Unjieng - The Philippine Star

Discovering new musical acts that have received a lot of buzz and fully deserve the attention is a distinct pleasure.

Here are two artists who should be up there come Grammy-time next year.

Wet — Don’t You (Columbia/Sony, available on Amazon.com). Hailing from the Brooklyn/New York music scene, Wet enjoyed being one of the most sought-after bands to be signed up by a major label last year. Chill, trance and the ethereal vocals of singer Kelly Zutrau are what pushed the three-piece band to be worthy of the unusual attention it garnered. Like Dido given a more chill, electronic musical backdrop, Wet pleases as an after-hours musical act one can listen to when winding down after a stressful day. It’s All in Vain, Deadwater, All the Ways, Small and Silver and Body became immediate favorites; but what stands out is the consistency of the whole album.

El Vy — Return to the Moon (4AD Records, available on Amazon.com). With an “El” like the one in Elvis, and rhyming with pie, El Vy is an indie supergroup collaboration between Matt Berninger of The National, and Brent Knopf of Menomena and Ramona Falls. Friends for nearly a decade, the two would encounter each other while touring with their respective bands, and send each other snippets of music ideas till they decided to formalize the collaboration last year. It’s like you merged Lou Reed-type vocals with Vampire Weekend music; and I loved the originality of the sound. Listen to the title track Silent Ivy Hotel and No Time to Crank the Sun to discover the real magic.
