CEBU, Philippines - It’s that time of the year again when Sacred/ Ateneo Hearters face off against each other again in sports. A record of 27 teams will see action in the Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) 2017 basketball tournament which kicks off on Sunday at the Magis Eagles Arena at the SHS-Ateneo campus in Canduman, Mandaue City.

Defending champions of Division A Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) of Franco Soberano leads the host of teams that are split into three divisions. Division A is an open category of four teams.  Challenging CLI are Gaisano Capital of team owner Edmund Gaisano, Harley Davidson with team owner Regan King, and the SHS-Ateneo Magis Eagles B Team.

Division B is composed of eleven teams from Batch 1989 to 2002, while Division C is composed of twelve teams from Batch 2003 to 2015. Teams in Divisions B and C are composed of players of a graduating batch.

The format for Division A will be a triple-round robin affair, with the top two teams clashing for the championship in a best of three series. Divisions B and C will have teams play a single round robin elimination phase with the top eight ranked teams moving on to the playoffs. The top four seeded teams will then have a twice to beat advantage.

The semifinals and finals will be played in a best of three series. Games will be played Wednesday  at the SHS-Ateneo Mango campus gym and Sunday at the Magis Eagles Arena. Armand Colina returns as Commissioner for a second straight year.

To improve efficiency and management, SHAABAA is partnering with Common Ground Basketball as the official apparel and operations managers of the league. They will also record game statistics and create an online data base where players, coaches and the general public can view all statistics from all games. (FREEMAN)
