Codera relishes training with topnotch coaches in elite US camp

CEBU, Philippines - He has already carved a name for himself as member of the Golden State Warriors training camp and the first Filipino licensed coach of USA Basketball under its Youth Development Program but it seems that great things continue to flow in the way of US-based Cebuano NBA trainer Jefferson "Jeff" Codera Jr.

Codera further broadened his horizon as a hardcourt strategist after attending the week-long Snow Valley Iowa Basketball Camp, which is recognized by the prestigious Sports Illustrated as one of the best teaching camps in the US.

Held last July 19-24 at the Wartburg College gym in Waverly, Iowa, the elite camp was spearheaded by Snow Valley director Don Showalter, an eight-time USA Basketball U17 gold medalist head coach. He was hired by the USA Basketball Youth Division as Director of Coach Development just last May.

Interestingly, the 34-year-old Codera was the lone Pinoy among the 60-plus coaches all over the world who joined in the camp for individual skill enhancement that is committed to helping campers improve their individual skills in all areas of the game.

"For me, it was a once in a lifetime experience to be part of the USA training camp, which is the number one teaching school in the US as far as basketball is concerned," said Codera, who hails from Tabok, Mandaue City. "I had a great time in the camp and it further deepened my knowledge as a trainer/coach."

What amazes Codera most is that they worked for 15 hours each day without wasting even a single minute.

"The coaches were very tactical and systematic in what they impart to the participants. They were so good in performing as well as in explaining how to run plays, how to teach the kids well and how to break down each drills that we perform. Everyday, we are presented with a different strategy and a different workout," said Codera.

"The best part of the camp is that all the coaches were made to handle a team and teach them the fundamentals of the game. We develop them not only to become better players but also as better individuals."

Now on its 23rd year, Snow Valley basketball camp has been built around the pillars of four Cs – Choices, Comfort Zone, Communication and Compete.

Its coaches from across the globe and the best leagues of the world are carefully selected to ensure the highest level of teaching and coaching will be delivered to the campers.

Under the philosophy of treating each and every player as an individual, Snow Valley Iowa expects each and every camper to arrive prepared and bring a positive attitude as their success lies with their will and desire to get better as players.

"It was truly a great experience for me. The environment, the coaches, the kids and the people are awesome and very kind.  It was a well organized training camp. To be part of the Snow Valley organization is a priceless happening I will cherish in my whole life," said Codera. (FREEMAN)
