Nietes-Estrada moved next year
CEBU, Philippines - The planned superfight between two-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of Cebu's famed ALA Boxing Gym and unified WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada of Mexico supposedly set for September 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California has been postponed to next year.
In a press statement, ALA Promotions President and CEO Michael P. Aldeguer said Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, the handler of Estrada, has informed them that they received a mandatory letter from the World Boxing Association for Estrada to defend his title against current WBA flyweight champ Kazuto Ioka.
Aldeguer has assured though that the negotiations for the megabout will definitely be carried on the next months towards its realization, hopefully next year.
In an earlier interview, Aldeguer has hinted that the Nietes-Estrada might not happen as they hope for this year after their supposed meeting with the top executives of Zanfer Promotions scheduled two weeks ago in Los Angeles did not take place.
"It will still be a long way to make it happen. It takes time to make a fight of this magnitude," said Aldeguer.
With Estrada out, Nietes will most likely put his WBO light flyweight throne on the line against mandatory challenger and Mexican nemesis Moises Fuentes o the September 24 date headlining the third Pinoy Pride show of ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports in the United States. (FREEMAN)
