Largo, Nocos, Suson march into finals of 21st Gullas net

CEBU, Philippines - Naga City’s Mitch Largo, Tiffany Nocos of Lapu-Lapu City and CJ Suson became the first three netters to make it to the final round of the 21st Jose R. Gullas Tennis Cup yesterday at the Consolacion Tennis Club in Barangay Laray, Consolacion.

Largo advanced to the finals of the unisex 10-under after a dominating, 4-2, 4-0 victory over Ian Lim. He now waits for the winner of the semis clash between Aaron Tabura and CJ Suson.

Tabura earlier ousted Jave Legaspi, 4-1, 7-4 while Suson won against Rafael Gonzales, 5-3, 4-1.

Nocos and Suson, on the other hand, battle each other in the girls 12 finals. Nocos had an easy win against Kiersten Albofera, 6-1, 6-4 in the semis, while Suson escaped Nicole Villar, 7-6, 7-6.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Abarquez snared two semifinal seats via the girls 18 and girls 16.

Abarquez joined Shyne Villareal and Zethley Mae Alferez in the girls 18 semis after eliminating Kara Salimbangon, 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. She also moved to the girls 16 final four after beating Phel Coderos, 6-1, 6-2.

Like Abarquez, Patricia Velez is also in the semis of the girls 16 after a lopsided 6-1, 7-3 win over Shedel Gica.

In the girls 14, Ellaine Bahonsua sealed her semis slot with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicole Villar, while Lyrah Repollo silenced Angelika Claridad, 6-0, 6-0. Wyne Paglinawan trounced Shedel Gica, 6-2, 7-5.

Palarong Pambansa silver medalist Jose Maria Pague also made it to the semis in the boys 18 after clobbering Peter Cantillas, 6-2, 6-0 as Francis Lambayan dumped Paul Coderos, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to semis.

In the boys 14 semis today, Nilo Ledama takes on Cesar Kristoffer Salimbangon, while Brent Cortes faces John Velez. Salimbangon, Cortes and Velez also snared a semis slot in the boys 12 along with Ethan Quino. (FREEMAN)
