Melencion survives toughest match on opening day

CEBU, Philippines - Steven Melencion overcame VJ Mondejar in what is by far the toughest match in the 21st Jose R. Gullas Tennis Cup, which kicked off yesterday at the Consolacion Tennis Club in Barangay Laray, Consolacion.

Melencion fended off Mondejar in a grueling three-setter, 6-7, 7-6, 10-6 in the boys 16 round of 32 played on the hard court.

In sharp contrast, Francis Hidalgo and Nilo Ledama made short work of their opponents, ramming through similar 6-0, 6-0 wins against Khallil Aragon and Vincent Adlaon, respectively.

The likes of Paul Coderos, Ray Dante Toledo, Nathaniel Alipe, and Francis Navales also hurdled their opening assignments to advance into the last 16 of  the boys 16-under category.

Toledo subdued Leandry Albocera, 6-1, 6-4, Alipe nipped Luis Segarra, 6-4, 6-4, while Navales defeated Kenneth Tenepre, 6-2, 6-3.

In the girls 14, the Coderos sisters also had a good start, with Pearl outsmarting Justin Lim, 6-4, 6-3 and Phel Hazel Coderos prevailing over Mary Maglasang, 6-1, 6-2.

Wane Albarracin, on the other hand, pulled off a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Pauleen Lopez in the girls 14 played on the clay court while Nicole Villar bested Mary Dantes, 6-3, 6-0.

Christine Montanez overpowered Christine Lemorin, 6-2, 6-2, while Kirsten Alcosera whipped Georgia Cobcoben, 6-4, 6-4. — (FREEMAN)
