Alaska Basketball D-League kicks Off

CEBU, Philippines – It was a day for the other schools to step up and be recognized at the Alaska Basketball D-League 2014, which kicked off over the weekend at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Mango Avenue Campus Gym. Minglanilla, St. Alphonsus Catholic School and Virgen delas Escuelas Pias led opening day winners at the third major tournament organized by the Cebu Youth Basketball League in partnership with Alaska.

In the Under 17 Division 2 action, Minglanilla cruised to a 68-27 win over Monterey School of Talisay. Meanwhile, SACS defeated Don Bosco Liloan, 69-36. In the Under 15 Division 2, Thumbs Up defeated Don Bosco Lilo-an, 58-41, while SHS-Ateneo 2 stopped Don Bosco Technology Center–B (DBTC), 45-33.

VEPS stopped SHS-AdC B, 50-7 in an Under 12 Division 2 game as University of the Visayas-B (UV) crushed Monterey, 92-20.

In the Under 10 age group, University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus outhustled Monterey, 59-25, while UV toppled (DBTC), 34-13. In the lone Under 12 Division 1 game, DBTC nipped SHS-AdC, 50-49.

The Alaska Basketball D-League 2014 is the third of three tournaments for the year managed by the CYBL. The first conference was the Alaska Basketball Cup 2014 which took place from January to March. This was followed by the CYBL VISMIN Goodwill Games in May. The current tournament features a total of 79 teams playing in four age groups: Under 17, 15, 12 and 10. It also features a Girls Under 17 age group.

Games will be played every weekend from August to November 2014. (FREEMAN)
