Ex-NPA member nabbed for drugs

CEBU, Philippines — A former member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested in a buy-bust operation in Sitio Pandayan, Poblacion Occidental, Consolacion, Cebu Saturday evening.

The police recovered 12 packs of suspected shabu weighing at least 12 grams worth P147,000 from Luciano ‘Mendo’ Poro, a native of Catmon town.

Recovered also from him was P1,500 believed to be proceeds of his illegal drug trade.

During the interrogation, Poro revealed that he was a former member of the NPA that was based in Sogod, Cebu.  He goes by the alias “Ka Jurey.”

He claimed that he served as the vice platoon leader of the said group before he surrendered to the Sogod policemen last October 2006.

Police Officer 1 Roel Aquino of the Consolacion police said that Poro is a newly identified drug peddler in the town and has been monitored for almost one month.

Meanwhile, five newly-identified drug personalities were arrested including the relative of Alvaro ‘Barok’ Alvaro in separate buy-bust operations in Sto. Niño, Looc , Danao City  Sunday dawn.

Police Chief Inspector Gerard Ace Pelare, Danao police chief, said those arrested were Ronald Alvaro, 39; Jonel Manco, 29; Charlston Mata, 35; Arnel Barosa, 24; and Roel Arioja, 34.

Danao operatives were able to confiscate a total of 14 small packs of suspected shabu with an estimated value of P8,850 and several drug paraphernalia.

All the suspects are now detained at the Danao police station cell and will be charged with violation of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The arrest of the suspects is part of the weekly ‘Oplan Limpyo’ operation of the Danao City police. (FREEMAN)
