CEBU, Philippines - Starting today, The Freeman and its sister publication Banat News will have new editors-in-chief.

Veteran journalist Achilles "Archie" Modequillo was named editor-in-chief of The Freeman, replacing Quennie Sanchez-Bronce, who resigned effective today.

Lucky Malicay, aside from being the managing editor of The Freeman, was also appointed as the editor-in-chief of Banat News.

Modequillo has been with The Freeman Lifestyle Section as columnist and contributor since 2002 before his appointment as editor of the section in 2014.

He had been a media practitioner since early '80s. He used to be manager of the popular Smash FM from 1984 to 1989.

While writing columns for The Freeman, Modequillo also worked as film correspondent of an international cable channel from 1996 to 2013. He still does advocacy films during his free time.

"I want us to think outside the box. Some standards don't work anymore. We have to adopt of the time and lifestyle of the readers," said Modequillo on what he intends to do with The Freeman.

Malicay, on the other hand, has been with The Freeman for the past 22 years.

He started his journalism career as reporter in various newspapers in Mindanao before joining The Freeman in 1995 through The Freeman Mindanao.

Rising from the rank, Malicay was a copy editor, assistant news editor, news editor and now the managing editor of the paper.

"With the support of everyone, The Freeman and Banat News will continue to soar high and remain number one in the hearts of Cebuanos," Malicay said.  (FREEMAN)
