Fuentes or Estrada up next for Nietes

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Though he's aleady booked for a mandatory defense against Mexico's Moises Fuentes after retaining his WBO light flyweight crown, there's still a big possibility that two-division world titlist Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes might land a superfight with Mexican double world champion Juan Francisco Estrada in his next ring appearance.

ALA Promotions President and CEO Michael P. Aldeguer said the Nietes-Fuentes bout is already a done deal and will headline their second Pinoy Pride show in the United States on September 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

"We've already come to terms with Zanfer Promotions for Nietes to face Fuentes in a mandatory defense in our second Pinoy Pride event in the US this September," said Aldeguer.

However, the dashing ALA executive said things could drastically change if ever their talks for a mouth-watering showdown between Nietes and Estrada, who holds the WBA and WBO flyweight belts, will come into fruition.

"Yes, negotiations are underway for a Nietes-Estrada superfight. If ever talks will prosper, then Nietes will take on Estrada instead of Fuentes in our September 24 card in the US," said Aldeguer.

"We'll try to make the Estrada fight happen but the Fuentes deal has been agreed upon. We"ll talk to Donnie about fighting at 108 or he goes up in weight to 112."

Should the Estrada megabout happens, the 33-year-old pride of Murcia, Negros Occidental will have to climb up the flyweight ladder but there's no need for him to relinquish his WBO 108-pound title because he is a Super Champion.

Nietes defended his WBO throne for the ninth time with a rousing TKO victory before the start of the 6th round against Mexican challenger Raul "Rayito" Garcia in the main event of the "Pinoy Pride 36:A Legend in the Making" fightcard last Saturday at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.

In a dominating performance before his hometown fans, the ALA Boxing Gym star dropped Garcia twice in round three, then punished him in the next two rounds forcing the Mexican to throw in the towel at the end of the fifth round.

With the win, Aldeguer said Nietes has proven that he's indeed on a different level now and should mix it up next with the best fighters out there.

"I'm ready to face whoever my next opponent will be anytime, anywhere. I will just depend on my management team on what's up next for me," said Nietes.  (FREEMAN)
