How to develop self esteem

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Self-esteem refers to how a person values himself or herself. It is also about how confident he is in his personal abilities. Clearly, self-esteem is an important attribute to develop in a child.

Following these simple steps can help you build your self-esteem.

Try to behave well always.

This is the sure way to reap praises from your family and friends, and in turn makes you feel good about yourself. Praises are confirmations that you are doing right and a sign that you are making a good impression in others. Knowing that others value you makes you value yourself too.

Always try to do your best.

It is a fact that winners attract a lot of friends. But better yet, a child who always does his best develops the “success” habit in himself. And there’s nothing that earns the most praises quite like friends and successful performance.

 Keep learning something new.

In many ways, self-esteem also comes from knowing that you know and can do things. When other kids come to you to teach them something, it builds your self-confidence. So learn new skills or new information. Simple skills like doing your own laundry or riding a bike or preparing a simple meal are sure to reap praises from family and friends. Also, knowledge of important dates or places of the world will do the same.

Value your relationships.

One of the hardest things to do in life is to have successful personal relationships. You can start it early in your life, so that you know too well how to handle problems with family and friends as you grow. Learn how to choose the people to keep as friends. And then value the relationships you have. Learn to express empathy and how to resolve conflicts.

Show appreciation for the love you get.

Consider how much love your parents and other family members give you. Make you they know much you appreciate it. Do the same with your friends. And be open about expressing your love for them.

Learn to accept failure graciously.

Keep in mind that failure is not the end of the world. Try your very best; but if you must fail, take it as fact of life and learn from it. Failing a test or losing a sports match, for example, can feel like a disaster. It can make you lose all faith in yourself and you may not want to try again. But, no, it should be a learning experience for you, instead – you just have to study harder and practice some more. By taking failure positively, you will develop your resilience, and helps you to see failure or losing as a learning opportunity. You will see that the more you try, the better you will become.

Self-esteem built on good relationships and acquired skills is always worth the effort devoted for it.  (Reference: www.lifetimeasia.com)
