BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Social media giant Facebook launched this week a program for young social entrepreneurs whose businesses address major social problems in the world.

Facebook vice president of global marketing solutions Carolyn Everson led the launching of the Facebook Social Entrepreneurship Award during the One Young World Summit here on Thursday (Friday in Manila).

The award is open to youth ambassadors of the One Young World Summit, an annual gathering of over a thousand youth leaders and innovators from across the country.

“There are so many young leaders in the world that are focused on finding new ways to help and strengthen their own communities. And we want to do our part for those leaders because this goes hand in hand with Facebook’s mission,” said Everson.

“The Facebook Social Entrepreneurship Award was created with One Young World to empower businesses that can help communities be healthier, make education more affordable, use technology to improve the environment and so much more. One great idea can change the world and we are committed to helping more leaders make a difference,” she said.

The social media giant said applicants for the award must be scalable, empower their community and address a major social or economic issue in their respective regions.

One project each from North America; Europe, Middle East and Africa; Asia-Pacific; and Latin America will be included in the shortlist that will vie for the grand prize of $55,000, advertising credits and marketing mentorship from Facebook.

The remaining three projects will each receive $5,000 and other support from the social media company.
