Petition supporting DENR Secretary Lopez
What do you think is best for our people and our country? To have the so-called billions from mining or to sustainably retain our clean water resources, our hills and mountains for our people now and for the next generations of Filipinos?
Most of the mining areas cover ancestral lands of our indigenous peoples. They have survived centuries of independent, self-reliant lives cooperating solely with Mother Nature. The mines have swept away their heritage, our national cultural loss.
Whose interests should we protect? Those who control the mining industry or our people? The mines have been ongoing for years. Have the taunted billions from mining benefited our people and have their communities and environment sustainably protected? Our people who survived in their communities before mining grabbed their lands and destroyed their environment are now poor and unhealthy.
When the precious minerals have been completely extracted and exhausted, what happens to our people and communities? Globally, we have read about former thriving mining communities turn into ghost towns. Would we settle for ghost towns rather than for green, lush natural environment providing sustainable food and other helpful supply for our people and their communities?
Who are gaining from the so-called lucrative mining industry? Let us demand to know the Filipinos who are gaining the billions at the expense of the greater majority of the poor in the mining communities.
To ensure the urgent campaign to protect and preserve our environment, let us support the campaign to retain DENR Secretary Gina Lopez.
The petition in your support of Lopez is now circulating through emails, Facebook, and other social media so that more signatures can be added as our show of support for her laudable campaign to sustain and protect our environment.
