Sellers of flowers, candles brace for surge in demand

Carlo S. Lorenciana - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Flower vendors are now bracing for the surge in flower demand ahead of the yearly observance of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day next week.

Vendors at the Freedom Park in Carbon market are now starting to feel the rush.

"Demand is expected to increase this weekend," flower seller Nene Arcayan, 53, told The FREEMAN yesterday.

Vendors said the supply of locally grown flowers is ample due to favorable weather, however they are worried that the supply coming from Luzon may be limited as it was recently battered by typhoons Lawin and Karen.

Vendors also see increased demand for Chrysanthemums, Malaysian Mums, Anthurium, Wonder White, Gladula and Golden Yellow.

Roses are also expected to be in-demand, they said.

And as demand goes up, prices of flowers are likewise expected to go up starting this weekend.

Most of the flowers sold in various markets in Cebu City are locally grown while the rest are imported.

Flowers are locally sourced from Busay, a mountain area in Cebu City, Dalaguete town and Bohol province.

Aside from flowers, candles are also in-demand during this time of the year.

Vendors are selling vigil candles (those placed in glass cups) and stick candles, which can be brought at cheaper prices.

This weekend, people are expected to flock to flower and candle stores to buy the seasonal items. The surge in buyers is expected to prevail until November 2. (FREEMAN)
