The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Toledo City Trojans snapped out of their five-game losing skid  but had to pass through a double thriller before subduing their rivals in the second round of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Open Conference played virtually via chess.com platform last Saturday night.

Led by International Master Rico Mascarinas and National Master Rommel Ganzon, the Trojans lost in the blitz play by a hairline, 3-4, but edged the Peng Cheng Checkered Dragons of China in the rapid segment, 8-6, to pull off a 11-10 squeaker.

The Bonn Rainauld Tibod-skippered Trojans, also manned by Richard Natividad, Redentor Nailon, Rogelio Enriquez Jr., and lady player Jinky Catulay, went through another tough grind after that.

The Trojans of co-team owner Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang and team manager Felix Poloyapoy, Jr. figured in a 10.5-10.5 stalemate before fending off the Davao Executives Chess Society, 3-0, via Armageddon.

Toledo, thus, moved to eighth place in the Southern Division standings with a 2-5 win-loss record.

The Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors, on the other hand, scored another twinkill to position themselves in a tie at fourth to sixth spots with SinQGApore and the Penang Blue Panthers of Malaysia with identical 4-3 slates.

Bannered by Saudi-based NM Elwin Retanal, Woman IM Bernadette Galas, Anthony Makinano, Linky Yap, Allan Pason, Bryle Arellano and playing team manager Aldwin Daculan, the Naki Warriors blasted the Peng Cheng squad, 13-8, and then whipped the Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, 12-9, for their fourth straight win after a woeful 0-3 start. — EBV
