A child was injured after figuring in a hit-and-run incident the other day in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.
In a video now going viral, two minors can be seen sitting by a traffic sign in the middle of the road when an SUV ploughs straight into them. One of them jumps out of the way, but the other, with his back to the vehicle, is thrown some meters away, faceplanting into the pavement.
The SUV driver floors it, probably afraid because he or she hit someone and was going the wrong way in a one-way street.
Thankfully, the child survived. His parents are now seeking the help of the Lapu-Lapu City Government to find the SUV driver.
The SUV driver must be found and held to account. We have had enough of drivers who don’t obey traffic rules.
It should also be mentioned that the driver fled the scene of an accident that he or she caused. If the driver didn’t flee out of panic but due to sheer arrogance or a sense of entitlement that he or she can’t be held responsible for his or her actions then that’s very worrisome.
Or the driver could have just been drunk when the accident happened. Either way such a person cannot be allowed to drive in our streets.
However, the parents of the minors must also be held to account for what happened.
It must be pointed out that this wouldn’t have happened if the minors hadn’t been out when they weren’t supposed to be.
The time stamp on the video says the accident happened at 2:54 A.M., way past the curfew imposed on minors as per local ordinance as well as the Safer Cities Initiative.
Authorities like the city government, the police, and the barangay officials aren’t remiss in reminding parents to keep the kids at home during certain hours. So why were they out in the late night hours?
Let’s teach the driver a lesson after he or she is caught. But until that happens let this at least be a lesson to those who aren’t supposed to be out after a certain time.
