About depression

READERS VIEWS - The Freeman

October 10 is world mental health day.

Depression, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders are common mental health issues.

Depression is a common illness worldwide, with an estimated 4% of the population affected. It is more common among adults older than 60 years. That is about 300 million people in the world.

I've had it myself. Situational depression is after something bad happened, like a death or separation. Clinical depression is long term and always there even though everything appears fine.

Most of my career was in health administration and teaching, so I was always helping other people. I have a degree in psychology and I worked for the mental health department in California.

Health problems, relationship, and financial problems are three of the most stressful things in life.

For me personally, if I'm depressed, I take a 100% cold shower. That works 100% of the time as a temporary solution. Then I use my supplements such as ginko biloba, multiple B vitamin complex, and a memory vitamin. I make sure my lungs are free of phlegm.

More oxygen means a happy spirit.

As far as depression, the first thing to approach is a person's general health. Walk every day or swim. Try yoga.

Get rid of anything in your diet like soda, chips, or greasy or salty foods. Deal with the basics such as cholesterol and blood pressure. Steam your foods to use less cooking oils.

The shower must be 100% cold to work. A cold river or waterfall is very effective. Then once the depressed person comes off of the bottom, they have to start working on their plan. A large number of people, after they deal with their underlying physical health problem, find their depression was not entirely psychological.

Counseling helped me a lot. I recommend it.

Did you know alcohol is classified as a depressant?
