JOMA’s Pointless Comparison

Joma Sison the founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines, New People's Army (CPP-NPA), in his statement entitled “How to Understand the Current Puzzle in Afghanistan” published in their website Philippine Revolution Web Central on August 21, 2021 says that it is a puzzle for some, how the Taliban took control of Afghanistan with only RPGs, landmines and AK rifles.

He is also trying to compare the CPP-NPA with the Taliban. “The puzzle is like the one about the people’s war in the Philippines persevering, expanding and deepening in the Philippines for more than 52 years, even without external military assistance, against the puppet government propped up and supplied with weapons by US imperialism.” Apart from comparison, is he saying that the CPP-NPA has legitimacy in the Philippines?

I don't think it is relevant to say that the CPP-NPA is similar to the Taliban. Taliban is Islamic-based in an original context and Islam has been the lynchpin of Afghanistan for so many years, while communism is just being fueled by the CPP-NPA leaders and has no natural roots here in the Philippines. It is a borrowed system, a communist ideology from Europe and it never fitted in the country’s diverse culture.

Moreover, the Philippines is not under any foreign control and will never agree to this. Just look at our history books replete with narratives of our quest for freedom, it talks how the Filipino people and its armed forces are always prepared to offer the ultimate sacrifice to defend the country from the Communists and whoever tries to overthrow the government. This scores us from the Afghans. As US President Joe Biden said “American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves.”

That is why I am not surprised that the CPP-NPA cannot even control one small village in any part of the country for over 52 years.
