Unbelievable

I was going to opine about the PNP asking barangays to issue ordinances against noise pollution, particularly karaoke singing what with most now working and studying from home, but decided on something else. I just couldn't help it when I read US President Donald Trump's call to Americans to "not be afraid of COVID, get out there". Trump and his wife were recently found to be positive for COVID-19. He was hospitalized but still found time to go out in his car and wave to supporters. He left the hospital after only three days, removed his mask in a defiant manner as he reached the White House from his helicopter, waved, and posed for pictures. By the way, his doctors have not said if he has tested negative for the virus after only three days in the hospital, only to say they will monitor him closely and assures everyone he is getting the best medical care. I surely wouldn't expect anything less.

He also told people not to be afraid of the virus and not be dominated by it. Unbelievable.  I really can't help but be astonished, befuddled, or even enraged at times at how Trump has belittled COVID-19. He has even belittled or set aside opinions and warnings by his top medical experts. You can count on one hand the number of times he has worn a mask and has organized mass events indoors where nobody seems to wear a mask. During the first US presidential debate between Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, he mocked Biden's constant wearing of a face mask. Of course, everyone remembers his Lysol ingestion to kill the virus.

The number of deaths in the US due to COVID-19 currently stands at 209,000, with almost 7.5 million infected. I don't know how Trump could say these things, except to think that all he has on his mind is to secure a second term. He wants to paint a safe atmosphere where people could go back to work, open their businesses, and get the economy flowing which of course is always on everybody's mind. He wants to look invincible to his sure voters as his poll numbers show he is trailing Biden. What all this means is he is putting the American people at risk.

Numbers don't lie. If I may quote CSI's Grissom, the evidence does not lie. COVID-19 is still very much around. The probability of being infected is still there especially if one is reckless. Trump is not the only one who tested positive in the White House. Several of his staff, even a few Republican senators have also been infected. COVID-19 is dominating our lives, the US is not an exception. A new normal has been established whether we like it or not. He seems to be forgetting the number of grieving families by throwing caution to the wind. It has always been said that we cannot sacrifice caution for the opening of the economy, which clearly Trump wants to do. I only hope those who have always believed in Trump do not become infected as he did. That alone should have spoken volumes.
