How society kills

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

With a new name, a new face, and a stunning aura, the guy who was previously known as Marlou Arizala is now Xander Ford. This shocked the sphere of the online world, if not the whole country. He was known for his witty videos along with his comrades. Everybody loved how he made people laugh especially with his face, now that person is gone.

He wasn't really that ugly, because beauty is subjective. It's just that society killed him because of how we portray beauty as a norm. It has been normal for us to say that those who are beautiful have white and smooth skin, a long nose, big round eyes, and glossy hair. Marlou died because society wanted him dead. The boy that we used to know who made us laugh on social media is now dead, and he said that himself.

This is such an absurd thought. Society wants to base one's worth on the way he or she looks instead of what his or her character is. The way we set the norm of beauty or being perfect is slowly destroying the youth's concept of authenticity. Today we live in a world where people speak their mind and a right is entitled to everyone. However, this results in a sick culture.

The media has a big role to play. Previous communication studies shows us that in Asian countries such as ours, white is considered more beautiful than brown. We are bound by how cosmetics brands sell their products to us. In turn the young person grows up desperate to be part of the norm, just to fit in. They forget their real self, the one given to them by the Creator and their parents.

There is no single solution to solve this problem when society is indeed a silent killer. A lot of children suffer from bullying and this pushes them to be one with the dead. I guess the best way is to believe that you are loved and wonderfully made. It is important that you believe in yourself and your capabilities in life.

It is true that being presentable will get you places but my principle always is to have a proper character first than to have good looks. Looks will not get you by when your heart and mind do not have compassion for others and the world. Well, dear society, please stop playing tricks on our minds. Also, the burden to teach the new generation that they are unique lies on us. We must keep in mind that they are accepted for who they are no matter how they look.

Xander Ford may be happy now with the way he looks but it is sending the wrong message to other young people who are also experiencing bullying. Parents and the whole village will play a big role in keeping their head sane so they will know that they are perfect just the way they are.
