It is the street at the first left corner of the Capitol Boulevard (now President Sergio Osmeña Boulevard) after the Rizal Memorial Library Building.
The honoree, Don Mariano Cui, was a lawyer, admitted to the Philippine Bar on September 9, 1901. Don Mariano was considered a Pro Filipino lawyer; he stood up against Captain Robert H. Page, the Philippine Constabulary Inspector during the first few years of the American Occupation in Cebu. Cui was the provincial fiscal when Captain Page wounded two Filipino Constabulary Officers with the use of a sword and imprisoned them.
It was Don Mariano Cui who was the judge of the trial of Don Vicente Sotto for an abduction case, however Cui was replaced by an American judge, Adolph Wislizenus. Don Mariano Cui was one of the first Filipino judges in the country, this after the Spaniards left and replaced by the Americans. His contemporary was Miguel Logarta. Don Mariano was also the legal mentor of Troadio Galicano of Carcar who later became a general during the anti-Spanish revolution and senator.
Don Mariano married Doña Antonia Perales (who died ahead of him in 1939), and had the following children: Rosario who married Dr. Ireneo Encarnacion, Mercedes who married a Ramas, Antonio who became a lawyer (admitted to the bar on August 2, 1945), married Elisa Quintos, Jesus a graduate of Bachelor of Laws at the University of Santo Tomas (Class 1926) and Jorge.
Don Mariano was a nephew of Don Pedro Cui and Doña Benigna Cui, founders of the Hospicio de San Jose de Barili, a home for the aged, created by a national law, under Act No. 3239 on November 27, 1925.
His son, Antonio became administrator of the Hospicio de San Jose de Barili on February 28, 1960 after Dr. Teodoro Cui on February 27, son of Mauricio Cui, a nephew of Don Pedro resigned and turned over the administration of the hospicio.
Don Mariano Cui died when he was more than 80 years old on July 19, 1952.
Months after his death, the Cebu City council composed of Carlos J. Cuizon, Eulogio E. Borres, Florentino D. Tecson, Jose A. Cavan, Florencio S. Urot, Casimiro V. Madarang, Generoso Jaca and Luis V. Diores named a street in his honor. The ordinance naming the street in honor of Don Mariano Cui was approved by Dr. Jose V. Rodriguez, Cebu City Mayor on September 12, 1952.
