2 separately arrested over gun violations

CEBU, Philippines – Police arrested a 38-year-old man allegedly carrying a firearm in Purok Kapayas, Barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City last Sunday evening.

Julius Segovia was caught red-handed by Police Officer 3 Bruce Taneo of the Mandaue City Police Office who was then about to go home in Sitio Kapayas.

According to Police Officer 3 Rudy Janagap of Gun-ob Police Station 3, Segovia, who resides in the same place, was under the influence of alcohol, engaged in an argument with one of his neighbors and exposed his .38 caliber revolver.

Janagap said the nearby residents were frightened of Segovia’s actions.

While Segovia was brandishing his gun, Taneo reportedly passed by the area and ordered the suspect to put his firearm down.

Segovia did not resist his arrest while Taneo then called the mobile police responders for assistance going to Gun-ob Police Station.

Aside from the firearm, five live ammunition rounds were also seized from Segovia.

Segovia is currently detained at the Gun-ob Police Station and will face a complaint under Comelec Resolution 10015 which bans the bearing, carrying or transporting of firearms and other deadly weapons.

Meanwhile, the head of a 12-year-old girl swelled after it was struck by his neighbor with the use of handgun last Sunday dawn in Zone 5, Barangay Biasong, Talisay City.

Karyll Anne Marie Cajes, resident of said place, was brought to Talisay City District Hospital. She was allegedly struck by Rodel Ampog, who is of legal age.

Senior Police Officer 1 Mikie Espina of Talisay City Police Station said the girl's mother, Felomina Cajes Cortes, and the suspect's live-in partner, Florence Anne Cortes, were having a heated argument before the incident.

Ampog, who heard the altercation, took the side of his live-in partner. He reportedly got mad and went to their house and came back armed with a .45 caliber without magazine.

However, the suspect turned his anger on the child by striking her on the head.

Police Officer 3 Roberto Barnido, a neighbor, came to pacify both parties. He reportedly saw Ampog armed with a gun.

Moments later, the local police arrived and apprehended Ampog when he failed to present legal documents for his firearm.

"Nibutoy gyud ang ulo sa bata kay armas gud ang gibunal. Siguro basin nanggulat lang to ang suspek kay wala ma’y magazine ang iyang armas," said Espina.

Authorities yesterday filed cases of illegal possession of firearms, Comelec gun ban violation and child abuse against the suspect. (FREEMAN)
