PWDs in Mandaue ask city for consideration

CEBU, Philippines - Persons with disabilities (PWD) in Mandaue City want the city government to adopt a measure allowing PWDs to board tricycles and public utility vehicles even in areas not designated for loading and unloading passengers.

“We want the city to give consideration to PWDs,” said Michael Allan Pialago, Mandaue City PWD federation president.

Pialago, who is also the vice president of the national federation of PWDs, said he has raised the concern to Councilor Elstone Dabon, chair of the committee on transportation.

Pialago said he knows the purpose of designating areas for loading and unloading passengers.

“But maybe, we, PWDs can be given consideration especially during times when the traffic is not heavy,” said Pialago, who walks with crutches. He was struck by polio when he was a child.

Dabon, in a separate interview, said he will discuss the matter with the traffic management board, who can then recommend a policy to the city council.

Dabon said he also sees the need to allow PWDs to board or get off vehicles even in areas not marked as loading and unloading stations.

“For me, it’s just but proper to give consideration to PWDs,” he said.

Aside from PWDs, Dabon said special consideration can also be given to senior citizens and pregnant women.

PWDs in Mandaue joined last week’s National Disability Week, and also participate in the activities of the Cebu Provincial Government’s month-long celebration for PWDs. (FREEMAN)
