CEBU, Philippines - A Talisay City opposition councilor will propose a measure next week to ask Mayor Socrates Fernandez to stop all road widening projects in the mountain barangays.
The idea came to Councilor Danny Caballero of Liberal Party following the death last Thursday of a woman at a road being widened in sitio Tangub, barangay Lagtang.
A rock rolled down a hill, hitting Letecia Alcoseba on the head, killing her.
After the rock bounced off her, it hit companion Jovy Laborada, injuring her on the shoulder.
The two women were travelling on a motorcycle taxi, or “habal-habal,†from Jaclupan on the way to Tabunok, driven by Michael Briones, live-in partner of Laborada.
The Department of Public Works and Highways is presently carrying out road widening projects in the city.
Willy Abatayo, project manager of contractor QM Builder, said safety measures are in place at the site.
What happened was purely an accident. QM Builder will extend financial assistance to the families of the two women.
Talisay City Police Station officer-in-charge Superintendent Elmer Lim said his office will entertain relatives of the victims if they decide to file charges against QM Builder. (FREEMAN)
