CEBU, Philippines —  A total of P15,000 in cash prize is up for grabs for the top finishers of the 1st R.B. Potot Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament, which will be played over the board under strict health protocols on Saturday (April 24) at the Solea Mactan Resort in Cordova, Cebu.

Organized by RiChessmasters (RCM) and Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) teams Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors and the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, the 7-round Swiss system competition is being held in memory of Cebuano chess legend R.B. Potor Sr. who passed away due to natural causes just last February.

“This tournament was organized to pay tribute to my father, R.B. Potot, who taught many Cebuano kids the game of chess back in the 1950s and 1960s,” said Ariel Potot, according to the report of Philstar.com’s Ricky Olivares. “The 1st R.B. Potot Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament is to continue his legacy and to give the young children of Cebu a chance to learn the game and even get an athletic scholarship.”

The founder and CEO of RCM, Potot is also vice chairman of PCAP, the country’s first ever professional chess league. He saw action as homegrown player the Cordova Dagami Warriors that placed eighth in the Southern division and reached the playoffs of PCAP’s All-Filipino Conference.

The champion will pocket P5,000 while the second to fifth will take home P3,500, P2,500, P800 and P700, respectively. The sixth to 10th placers will receive P500 each.

Participants are limited to only 70 on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who are interested to join may visit the Facebook page of Richessmasters for further details. — EBV
