WBC adapts to change in time of crisis

CEBU, Philippines —  The World Boxing Council under the leadership of Maurico Sulaiman will push through with its annual convention this year but it will be done using online platform for the first time in the WBC's 57-year history.

In an official statement, Sulaiman said as much as they wanted to stage their yearly event right at the heart of St. Petersburg City in Russia this August, it is not safely possible to travel right now due to the global pandemic.

Nevertheless, Sulaiman said the current situation shouldn't be a reason for them to lose sight of putting their plans in place for the WBC specially in these challenging times.

"At the World Boxing Council, we are convinced that together boxing is capable of overcoming any border, boundary or frontier, and that there is no adversity that can separate our great family," Sulaiman said.

He announced the WBC 58th Annual Cyber Convention on August 12-15 from the majestic city of St. Petersburg, best known of its Hermitage (The Winter Palace) that is widely considered as one of the world's greatest treasuries of art and antiquities.

"Our hosts haven't forgotten the promise they made to us in Cancun – to make this a unique and unforgettable event," said Sulaiman.

"Even though we will celebrate this great fiesta virtually from August 12 to 15, we are sure that we will feel at home, embraced by the warmth of the inhabitants of a city that combines culture, tradition, history and modernity, and those who have predicted wonderful surprises for us," he ended.
