CEBU, Philippines — What was expected to be a close championship battle turned into a one-sided match as the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown battered the University of the Visayas (UV)-Minglanilla, 100-41, to rule the Southern Cebu leg of the 13th Chooks-to-Go SM National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) League over the weekend at the sprawling SMS-Boystown Complex in Tungkop, Minglanilla.
Host Boystown advanced to the finals after decimating Pinamungajan National High School, 74-42, while UV-Minglanilla booked the other championship ticket after escaping past Lipata NHS, 62-60.
In the gold medal match, the Boystowners proved too much to handle for the hapless UV-Minglanilla side.
C-Jay Gonzales led all scorers with 24 points to emerge as the Most Outstanding Player.
The outcome of the game was already a foregone conclusion when the Boystown cagers raced to a fast 32-11 start.
After a lukewarm second-quarter show, Boystown went back to business in the third period where they mauled UV 31-9. They then closed the match with a loud 28-9 back to come up with a 59-point blowout.
The Boystown’s success is a shining product of the comprehensive sports development program planted by sportsman/talent scout Van Halen Parmis and the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) at the Sisters of Mary three years ago.
“It has been a rags to riches story finding this goldmine of talented and well rounded students in one place. The sports program, which I started together with the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission then headed by Atty. Ramil Abing, with whom I owe a lot and his dedicated staff since 2016, faced a lot of challenges,” said Parmis, who is now the athletic director of SMS-Boystown. “I did not expect that this program will reach this far, but one thing I know from the beginning that the kids in this place has a lot to show to the world and to the Philippine sports.”
“The institution, headed by Sr. Emelan Lee, SM who put me in this position, and all the passionate and dedicated volunteer coaches, and the students, did not only treat me as a coach but as their father. This prompts me to pledge my lifetime commitment to the school, for the betterment of the sports program and to help the students reach their dreams,” added Parmis.
“I couldn’t ask for more than seeing these kids grow and become productive citizens of our country through sports. My advocacy in helping these kids wouldn’t be made possible without the tireless effort of all the people who always believe and supports me along the way.”
For emerging as champions in the tournament supervised by commissioner Lorberto V. Enriquez and backed up SM, Chooks-to-Go, Vivo, Smart, Darlington-Exped, SBP,Phoenix, Go for Gold, Molten, Gatorade, ESPN5, and Cignal, SMS-Boystown earned the right to represent Southern Cebu in the SM NBTC League Regional Finals next year in Bohol.
