UV Centennial celebration kicks off with charity run

CEBU, Philippines —  Over 3,000 runners will hit the roads early morning today as the year-round University of the Visayas Centennial celebration formally kicks off with a fun run starting and ending at the quadrangle of the school's main campus along Colon Street.

The event is extra special as it coincides with the 131st birth anniversary of Don Vicente Gullas, founder and first president of UV. Don Vicente established UV as Visayan Institute in 1919.

The charity race is only fitting as it bodes well with UV's philosophy of love, leadership, and service to humanity.

"Be fit, healthy, and experience the heat of the UV Centennial Run 2019," said UV Athletic Director Chris Mejarito, who is elated to have the whole-hearted support of the UV student and alumni to their noble undertaking.

The run for a worthy cause features the 3K, 5K, and 10K distances.

Proceeds of the fund-raiser will be used to fund UV's various programs for its adopted barangay, Barangay Kamagayan. Its community outreach projects cover health, law and order, technical and vocational skills, and education by giving scholarships to poor but deserving students.

Meanwhile, aside from medals and certificates, the organizers have set aside P70,000 in cash prize for the top finishers in each category. EBV
