Cebu cycling legend Renato Mier passes away

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu cycling community lost one of its legends as Hall-of-Famer Renato Mier passed away yesterday after a long bout with diabetes. He was 59.

Mier, a member of the national team, is regarded as  the most accomplished Cebuano cyclist in history.

He won the bronze medal in the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, India. He also competed in the Asian Cycling Championships and in the World Track Cycling Championships.

He is the father of former national track cycling team member-turned mountainbike rider John Mier.

After retiring from the national team, he was absorbed as part of the national coaching staff of the Philippine mountainbike squad who was then based in Danao City.

Even if he is a trackster, Mier took the challenge and accepted the task of guiding the national mountainbike team.

Mier's wife Mercedes said that when she arrived in Ormoc to fetch his husband, Renato couldn't recognized her anymore as complications already reached his brains.

The family of the late Mier still could not give details as to when his remains will return to Cebu, but mostly likely that he will have his funeral at St.Peter Chapels in New Imus Street, this city.   (FREEMAN)
