Niños rule Mayor Rama swimfest

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Niños extended their dominance in the pool via the 1st Mayor Michael Rama Cup Invitational Age-Group Swimfest at the Cebu City Sports Center over the weekend.

Right after making waves in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet, the Niños under coach Rolando Alvarez seized 47 golds, 45 silvers, and 31 bronzes. They also placed at the top 6 spots in most of the events they joined in to accumulate a total of 1,367 points.                   The visiting Silliman University Red Stallions of Dumagauete City came out a distance second with 576 points from their 13 golds, five silvers and 15 bronzes, while the University of Bohol Rockets landed at third with 415 points on a 10-12-12 medal tally.

The race featured events for swimmers aged 18 years old and above.  The Cañeda siblings Noel and Trina reigned supreme in the said division.

Trina shared the best swimmer award with the equally-talented Romylin Nina Ignacio.

Michael Ichiro Kong, CVIRAA's most dominant swimmer, came out as the most outstanding swimmer under the 15-17 age group. Three other TCC members emerged as most bemedalled swimmers in their respective classes in Quintin Sabalandre (6-under) and Mike Gabrielle de la Serna and Karen Mae Indaya (13-15). — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN)
