Santa Fe warns about ‘jellyfish season’

CEBU, Philippines — The town of Santa Fe in Bantayan Island, Cebu has reminded the public especially the tourists to be cautious while swimming in their coastal water.

This is due to the increasing number of jellyfish present in the seawater because it’s “jellyfish season.”

“Jellyfish can vary in size, shape, and severity of their stings. While most jellyfish stings are not life-threatening, they can cause discomfort, pain, and sometimes allergic reactions. It is crucial to be aware of the potential risks and take necessary precautions to ensure safety,” reads the reminder of the local government unit through the Facebook page of the Municipality of Santa Fe.

To avoid being stung with jellyfish, the local government has advised the public to observe warning signs posted by the LGU and wear protective clothing to cover the skin.

“Consider wearing a wetsuit or other protective clothing that covers your skin to minimize direct contact with jellyfish tentacles. This can provide a physical barrier and reduce the chances of getting stung,” the LGU said.

The town also advised the public to use jellyfish repellents recommended by experts to help deter jellyfish from nearing the skin. Swimming near the jellyfish is also advised to avoid contact but once stung one should seek immediate medical attention.

“Rinse the affected area with saltwater (avoid freshwater, as it may worsen the sting), and consider using a vinegar solution or a commercial jellyfish sting remedy if available. Do not rub the area or apply pressure, as it can release more venom,” the LGU reminded.

Santa Fe is famous for its mesmerizing white sand beaches and is famous among tourists not only for locals but also international visitors. It is one of the famous tourism destinations located in Bantayan Island in the northern part of Cebu Province. — (FREEMAN)
