CEBU, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-7 has advised those who got stung by a jellyfish or bokya to immediately pour cooking oil and not vinegar.

“Bubo-an gyud og cooking oil or used oil kay mo slide ra na ang bokya. Sa among training dili suka ang ibubo kay naay tendency allergic ang usa na attack sa bokya. Mas maayo oil gyud aron mo slide ra ang bokya,” said BFAR-7 regional director Allan Poquita.

His statement was in reaction to the recent death of a 31-year-old woman from Bohol after being stung by a jellyfish in Sante Fe on Sunday afternoon.

“Bisan box jellyfish pa dili man na fatal. Pero kung ang biktima mag panic kay pilit baya nang jellyfish, ang tendency mosaka ang blood pressure unya naay uban nga high blood na daan unya mapilitan aning jellyfish maoy maka trigger sa heart attack tungod sa kahadlok,” said Poquita.

He instead advised the public especially those who will go on swimming under the scorching heat of the sun to wear protective gear.

“Dapat ilang swimming attire kanang matabunan gyud ang tibuok arms, mas maayo mag leggings unya magbutang og protective gear sa mata unya sa dili pa maligo manghaplas og oil,” said Poquita.

As a precautionary measure, it is best to bring cooking oil or used oil if one wants to go on swimming.

“Mas maayo magdala na lang gyud og oil. Para in case mapilitan og jellyfish, bubo-an ra na dayon,” Poquita added.

He said that jellyfish normally venture into the sea during summer season.

“Unya anha gyud na sila magtapok sa init dili anang landong. So, mao nay angay bantayan sa mga nangaligo of dagat,” Poquita further said. — (FREEMAN)
