CEBU, Philippines — Authorities in Cebu are expanding their investigation into the kidnapping of a Chinese national rescued from Barangay Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City.
Lt. Zosimo Ravanes, team leader of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG), said they are now investigating 10 cohorts of the two kidnappers arrested during the operation on May 6, two days after the victim, Li Hong Yu, was kidnapped.
The suspects arrested were identified as Rong Tong Xue and Guo Min Li. They and the 10 alleged cohorts are alleged members of a kidnap for ransom group that is based in Manila. The suspects came to Cebu purposely to kidnap Yu.
Yu was rescued from a safe house where he was allegedly tortured.
The rescue operation was carried out in coordination with the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) and the Regional Intelligence Division (RID)-7.
Ravanes said Yu was an investor of a real estate development in Mactan and the suspects demanded P10 million for his ransom.
Yu’s family, however, could not meet the demand and, instead, sought the help of the police.
"Kwarta gyud ilahang tuyo. Naa ni sila laing mga kauban pa nga mga Chinese pero sila (duha ka suspetsado) ra atong naabtan sa safehouse," Ravanes said.
Ravanes said it was the Chinese nationals they arrested who told them they have other companions, including one they refer to as ‘boss’.
The victim also said there are Filipinos in the group.
"Naa sab silay kauban nga Pinoy matod pa sa biktima kay adunay Pinoy mga apil sa pagpangidnap kaniya," Ravanes said.
Charges have been filed against the suspects and the court has issued a commitment order on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.- JMO (FREEMAN)
