Infection rate in Cebu City remains low

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City has managed to maintain a low infection rate for eight consecutive days, data of the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

EOC said the city’s positivity rate remains below five percent since April 29, adding that it is within the threshold of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“For a week already (From 28 to May 6), our daily positivity rate is within the WHO threshold of 5%.This is an indication that we are doing well in our fight against COVID-19,” said EOC deputy chief implementer and City Councilor Joel Garganera.

The lowest infection rate noted was last Saturday at 2.2 percent. Although, only 409 were tested as compared to last May 5 with 2.37 percent out of the 1,227 tested.

The total active cases here went down to 474, including the 33 new ones on May 6. The number is the lowest recorded so far since the middle of January this year.

Also, the city’s critical care utilization rate remains low at 24.4 percent for both private and public hospitals.

While the positivity rate and active cases are low, the EOC noted three more deaths recorded on May 6. One of the three deaths was from last month but got only verified yesterday.

Garganera said the residents should not let their guards down despite the ongoing vaccination rollout.

He said the public must continue observing the health protocols, including the wearing of face masks and face shields.

“But then again, we are also opening more businesses, more movements so the more we should be mindful, magmatngon kanunay sa pagtuman sa mga health protocols,” he said.

Based on the Department of Health-7’s case bulletin on May 6, however, Cebu City’s active cases are at 833.  It is yet to verify the 359 recoveries.

In the same DOH data, Lapu-Lapu City has 510 active cases, Mandaue City has 335 and Cebu province has 589 active cases.

On the other hand, Bohol province’s active cases went slightly lower at 993 while Negros Oriental at 594. But the active cases of Siquijor province edged up slightly to 14. — KQD (FREEMAN)
