Cebu City’s PESO is country’s best

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The country’s best office of Department of Manpower and Development and Placement or the Public Service Employment Office is found in Cebu City.

PESO-Cebu City emerged as the winner among the national nominees under the highly urbanized city category, tying it up with the PESO offices of Olongapo City in Zambales and Valenzuela City in Metro Manila.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment-7, it was the second time PESO-Cebu City was adjudged the best PESO office in the country after it also won the award in 2016.

“We were hopeful that, for this year, at least one of Region-7’s contenders to the national search would take home the most prestigious award and PESO-Cebu City making it as one of the national Best PESOs definitely made us very proud,” said DOLE-7 Director Salome Siaton in a statement

Siaton headed the team from Region-7 in personally receiving the award on behalf of then PESO-Cebu City manager Fidel Magno. PESO-Cebu City received a trophy and P100,000 cash prize.

Organizers said that the accomplishments of all winning PESO offices this year went through an extensive and tedious screening process.

But Siaton said the award means more than just recognition.

“More than the fame and prestige earned by PESO-Cebu City, we hope that it will serve as a role model to all other PESOs, taking its best practices to further heights reaching more jobseekers needing assistance,” Siaton said.

Siaton also highlighted the contributions made and assistance extended by the DOLE’s Technical Support Services Division-Employment Workers’ Welfare not only to Cebu City PESO but also to all contenders to the national search.

“Working closely together is instrumental for making the Region’s dream of getting the award, come true. Win or lose, all nominees from Region-7 are victors in the eyes and heart of the DOLE. The contributions made by all the PESOs in the Region will always be valued and treasured,” she said.

Region-7’s other contenders to the national search included the Cebu Technological University, a nominee under the job placement office Category; Dumaguete City-PESO, a nominee under the component city category; and PESO-Cebu Province under the first class province category.

Another award was given to Region-7 for being the Best PESO User and Advocate of PEIS, which was granted to PESO-Negros Oriental under the first class province category.

The award recognizes the top PESO users and advocates of PhilJobnet and PESO Employment Information System. For such award, PESO-Negros Oriental received a certificate of recognition and P70,000 cash prize.

PhilJobnet is an automated job and applicant matching system which aims to fast-track jobseekers search for jobs and employers search for manpower.

The PEIS, on the other hand, is the enhanced version of the Skills Registry System, which is a database of active manpower supply containing the profiles of all persons and employers registered under the National Skills Registration Program, which is initiated by DOLE with the main objective of maintaining a continuing nationwide skills registry through its SRS database.
